(More customer reviews)The Yeti came at dawn, their ice trumpets blowing the harrowing assault.Charging with icicle spears as long as a man, riding their massive snarling mutant polar bears, they came in wave after wave; we launched our frozen-spit-hardened snowballs with all our might, and emptied our piton guns into them again, again, and again. The first redoubt fell when Carstairs was pulled over and into the impossible swirling maul of white arms, legs, teeth, the pink mist billowing out then.We fell back to the second igloo wall, where we held them for another two hours of crystal Alpine hell.As the sun crested magnificently over the Totenhorn, they came again in one last, frantic, all-out thrust, throwing everything they had, even the strangely fetching Yetiettes, even the cute little Yetibabies, so small, ever so vicious, thrashing at our knees, so dangerously close to our quilted-wool-protected jumblies.By now we were all wounded, Haversham and Pigeonthwaite having fallen not three feet from one another. We retreated one final time to the Stronghold, where the Brigadier ordered, "Hold what you got!"It was fire by rank for 22 eternal minutes, our piton guns glowing orange in the subzero altitude, our number reduced to firing aluminum tent pegs and sharpened beef sticks, the snowballs long since exhausted. We stood inside the Stronghold, the White Death clamoring to penetrate. When it was all over, a mere handful of Yeti fell back, called off by their horrific King with his necklace of sherpa skulls, the Yeti dead chest-high against the bloodied walls, the Pollock-random crimson on the apricot of the tent fly so wrongly beautiful in the granite gray, glacial blue and snow white. The Stronghold walls bowed not in the slightest (and all zippers still functioned perfectly). Despite our frozen state, we took no pelts; such was the respect these bergwarriors had earned. We had earned the right to summit the next morning.
